La Guitarra en Rusia
José María Gallardo del Rey shares his recent experiences in Russia, where he took part in the Kaluga Festival. He reflects on the country’s rich musical culture and his admiration for Russian composers such as Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. He points out the unique situation in which the guitar is not taught as a principal instrument in Russian conservatories, but rather in schools for popular instruments—a factor that has led to resistance regarding its formal inclusion in music education.
Despite these challenges, the passion for the guitar is undeniable, with festivals and renowned artists contributing to its growth. Gallardo mentions his performances in prestigious Moscow theaters and the warm reception from audiences, marked by a respectful silence during performances.
The festival featured a program combining Spanish and contemporary music, and Gallardo performed the Concierto de Aranjuez. He appreciates how music transcends cultural and political boundaries, serving as a universal language. Despite the current situation in Russia, he feels grateful for the opportunity to share his music and continue building connections through it, reaffirming his commitment to return for future performances.
