The Concerto for a Gentleman is a work for guitar and orchestra composed in 1954 by Joaquín Rodrigo (Sagunto, 1901 - Madrid, 1999). It was dedicated to the guitarist Andrés Segovia, who inspired its creation and premiered it in 1958.
The piece is based on 17th-century dances by the Baroque composer Gaspar Sanz, reinterpreted with elegant orchestration and a modern harmonic language. It consists of four movements: Villano and Ricercare, Españoleta and Fanfare of the Neapolitan Cavalry, Dance of the Axes, and Canary. Each movement captures the essence of Spanish Baroque music through a melodic and rhythmically accessible approach.
This concerto stands out for its courtly and refined character, balancing the virtuosity of the guitar with subtle orchestration. Its evocative style and connection to Spanish musical tradition make it one of the fundamental pieces of the guitar repertoire.
