The Fantasía in C Minor by Sylvius Leopold Weiss (Grottkau, 1687 – Dresden, 1750) is a brief yet profoundly expressive work, composed in 1719. Originally written for the baroque lute, this piece has been successfully adapted into the classical guitar repertoire, retaining its introspective character and harmonic richness.
With a duration of approximately two minutes, the fantasia is structured in two contrasting sections that explore the key of C minor with a harmonic language characteristic of the late Baroque period. Weiss, recognised for his virtuosity and his friendship with Johann Sebastian Bach, demonstrates his mastery of lute composition in this work, combining expressive melodic lines with a subtle contrapuntal texture.
This piece is ideal for intermediate to advanced guitarists who wish to delve into the baroque repertoire and develop a sensitive and stylistically informed interpretation.
