Paco de Lucía III
In this third chapter, José María Gallardo del Rey shares his experiences and insights from working with Paco de Lucía, focusing on their collaboration for the Concierto de Aranjuez. He recalls his first experience in Japan in 1990, where he was struck by the country’s technological advancement. He emphasizes how Paco, in choosing him as musical director, needed more than a traditional conductor—he sought a partner who understood his style and could help him prepare for the concert.
Gallardo explains that, rather than following the traditional score, they developed an intuitive method based on listening and improvisation. This approach allowed Paco to break free from the limitations of the recording and focus on the freshness of live performance. Through long rehearsal sessions, the two explored technical and creative solutions, enriching their interpretation.
He also mentions the influence of copla and tango on Paco’s music, and how these traditions helped shape his style. Finally, Gallardo offers advice on the importance of playing in tempo and being faithful to the original work before adding expression, emphasizing that learning is a continuous and shared journey.
