Ástor Piazzolla (1921 – 1992) was an Argentine bandoneonist and composer, regarded as one of the most important musicians of the 20th century and one of the most significant tango composers worldwide. His works transformed traditional tango into a new style known as nuevo tango or avant-garde tango, blending elements of jazz and classical music.
This guitar arrangement and performance of “Milonga del Ángel” by José María Gallardo del Rey transports us to Piazzolla’s 1960s—one of his most creative periods. The piece is part of a series centered around the figure of the angel, which includes compositions such as Tango, Introduction, Death, and Resurrection of the Angel, originally written for a theatrical play by Alberto Rodríguez Muñoz. In this context, an angel becomes a healer of the souls of neighbors in a Buenos Aires suburb.
The Milonga, composed three years later, stands out for its melancholy and beauty, fusing emotion into a masterpiece. It is one of Piazzolla’s saddest and most beautiful compositions—a piece that invites repeated listening without ever losing its charm.
